USA, ca. 1940s. A rare writing desk by Austrian designer Ersnt Schwadron. Executed by Vladimir Kagan early in his career, and while still working at his father’s New York City workshop, it features mahogany construction in original bleached finish. Seven drawers - including central drawer with lock and key - offer generous storage. Finely constructed, the cross-hatched surface, cowhide pulls, and flared legs add interest. Retailed through Rena Rosenthal, whose exclusive Madison Avenue shop helped introduce sophisticated modernist design to the American market. Sensitively refurbished to preserve the patina, the condition is excellent.
