USA, ca. 1960s. A moody oil on canvas titled “Indian Dance” by Karl W. Stuecklen (1940-2005). Born in Leipzig, Germany, Stuecklen emigrated to New York City in 1957, where he studied and later taught at the School of Visual Arts. Influenced by German Expressionism and his rural surroundings, Stuecklen landscapes are often filled with color and light, while the subjects of his portraits often blend into their forest backgrounds. He is perhaps best known for his drawings and illustrations, which were included in many of James Beard’s cookbooks. Signed, dated, and in overall very good vintage condition.
