Born in rural Iowa, Porter studied in Colorado before attending Boston University, where her teachers included Conger Metcalf and Walter Tandy Murch. During the 1960s, she was active in Boston’s artistic community - becoming part of The Studio Coalition in the South End. Known for her expressive canvases, Porter’s work possesses tremendous energy and rhythm. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the MFA Boston.
