USA, ca. 1985. A collection of six unique vessels by New York ceramicist James Makins. Each features wheel-thrown enameled porcelain construction executed in saturated jewel tones. Inscribed signature to the underside of each piece. Quite striking as a group and in excellent vintage condition.
Born in 1946, James Makins is a ceramic artist known for his large and expressive sculptural forms, which are either painted or airbrushed to create dramatic, light absorbing surfaces. Makins received his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and his MFA at the Crandbrook College of Art. He keeps studios is New York City and Japan, and taught at the University of the Arts prior to its recent closure. His work can be found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
