Italy, ca. 1800. A spectacular pair of bergère chairs in the Directoire style. Each features elegant walnut construction with bone gray mohair velvet upholstery. Restrained details such as carved acanthus leaf arms and saber legs add interest. Beautifully made, sophisticated, and in excellent condition. While undoubtedly traditional, we love how the clean lines interact with modern design - adding just a touch of old world appeal.

Born out of the French Revolution, the Directoire style was a brief transitional period in the decorative arts, furniture, and fashion. Taking its name from the Directory that came to power following the Reign of Terror, the style’s understated nature was the result of its wartime origins. Stoic with a strong Neoclassical influence, it was a precursor to the more masculine Empire style.
