Chile, ca. 1970s. An enigmatic mixed media composition in watercolor and gouache by Mario Toral Muñoz (b. 1934). Features abstract shapes with realist black and white figural elements. Born in Chile, Toral studied in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paris. From 1973 to 1992, he lived in New York City, where he completed some if his most significant works. In 2007, he received the Medal of Honor from the Pablo Neruda Foundation in recognition of his contribution to Chilean culture. Toral and Neruda collaborated multiple times, with similar images appearing in the 1970 illustrated edition of 20 Poems de Amor y tuna Cancion Desesperada. Signed, dated, and in overall excellent vintage condition. Dimensions: 31.5” wide x 24” high x 1.5” deep. Item: 2371-154.
