Georg Thams Brown Leather Sofa

Georg Thams Brown Leather Sofa
Denmark, ca. 1960s. A scarce and stylish three-seat sofa by Georg Thams for Vejen Polstermøbelfabrik. Features incredibly heavy construction with original deeply patinated brown leather upholstery. Slouchy down-filled cushions have that perfect old baseball glove feel. Angled wingback design, wide curved arms, and Brazilian rosewood legs all enhance the elegant cantilevered form. Comfortable, dynamic, and professionally refurbished. Overall excellent vintage condition with appealing lived-in look.
Georg Thams was a German industrial designer born in 1935 in Flensburg - very close to the Danish border. He died in 2016 in Tønder, Denmark after a career as a well-regarded furniture maker working alongside names like Børge Mogensen and Poul Volther. Thams studied at the Flensburg School of Applied Arts and began his career as a carpenter before turning to industrial design, which perhaps explains the high build quality of his pieces.
A great example of Danish modernism - yet with a clear dose of German engineering.
