Northern Europe, ca. mid 18th century. An antique courting mirror in a remarkable state of preservation for its age and fragility. Features a beveled pine frame set with reverse hand-painted glass inlay and original looking glass. Referred to as “courting” mirrors because it’s believed they were given by young gentlemen attempting to impress their suitors. A luxury item at the time, and quite popular in the American Colonies, the decoration was meant to emulate more exotic Chinese pieces. Perfect in a powder room, foyer, or small hallway. In overall very good antique condition.
