USA, ca. 1980s. A monumental post modern vessel by New York artist Andrea Gill (b. 1948). Features glazed earthenware construction with bold decoration and intriguing silhouette. Born in Newark, NJ, Gill received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and her MFA from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She began teaching at Alfred in 1984, and has since won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Her works are in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Often employing hand-cut stencils and highly stylized patterns, Gill’s work is both decorative and playful. She is regarded as a pioneering ceramicist responsible for the reintroduction of surface ornamentation and majolica glaze techniques. Her forms are expressive, architectural, and highly distinctive.

Signature to bottom edge. The condition is excellent.
