China, ca. 1900. A large soy sauce pot or pickling vessel from the port city of Jiujiang fashioned into an attractive table lamp. Features hearty ceramic construction with ovoid shape and rich brown glaze. Fan-shaped cartouche with characters suggests original function; however, these containers were often recycled for water or wine. Professionally rewired and fitted with a new oiled kraft paper shade, it casts an atmospheric glow when lit. Overall excellent antique condition.
