USA, ca. 1950s. An early carved wood Cubist portrait by Connecticut sculptor Ann Lehman. Features expressive faceted form with abstracted face. Born in New Haven in 1928, Lehman studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art. At Yale, her interest in metal sculpture expanded while studying under Josef Albers and Jose de Rivera. In 1961, she founded the Creative Arts Workshop with Kiki Rabinowitz to make a range of crafts accessible to their local community. For over sixty years, Lehman taught her workshop at CAW, in addition to a course at Yale. An unusual piece with great scale - the condition is excellent.
