USA, ca. 1950s. A large and nicely executed watercolor seascape by Boston and Nantucket painter, printmaker, and educator Philip Burnham Hicken (1910-1985). During his career, Hicken taught at Boston University, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and was Chairman of the Department of Design at Boston School of Art, which eventually became The Art Institute of Boston. He was well-known within the Nantucket art scene from the 1960s through the 1980s, and spent his final years living year-round on the island. Professionally framed and in excellent vintage condition.
