USA, ca. 1990s. A nicely executed studio vase by Texas ceramicist Leslie Mitchell. Features pleasing shape with intriguing raku glaze, a technique that originated in sixteenth century Japan. As a process, raku involves rapidly cooling a glaze-fired pot. After being fired to 1800 degrees, the hot bisqueware pot is removed from the kiln and placed into a covered container with combustible material such as leaves or straw.
