Democratic Republic of the Congo, ca. 20th century. A carved wood mask or lukwakongo from the Lega people. Features hand-carved face with applied kaolin clay decoration. Miniature wood masks of this type serve as rank badges within the community and are never worn on the face. Instead, they are tied to the arm or displayed during gatherings. A pleasing and nicely executed piece with good presence. Most likely from the mid to late 20th century. Condition is excellent. Dimensions: 7.5” wide x 14” high x 3” deep. 1000-8405.
