USA, ca. 2010. Two medium size Crisscross Saucer pendant lights from George Nelson’s Bubble Lamp collection. Originally designed in 1952, Nelson was inspired by a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp that he coveted but found too expensive. Utilizing a steel skeleton, a turntable, and sprayed, self-webbing plastic, he created what has become a staple of modern interiors. These contemporary examples are by Modernica, who briefly manufactured the lamps on original equipment. Each features a pleasing organic shape with polymer shade that casts a warm, atmospheric light.
