Italy, 19th century. An impressive strand of antique Venetian glass chevron trade beads predominantly in blue, white, and red. Chevron beads have been traded throughout the world, most heavily in West Africa, where they were first introduced by Dutch merchants in the late 15th century. These beads remain a popular collectors' items and they are still worn for prestige and ceremonial purposes in some areas. Pleasing weight and texture make for a lovely decorative object.
