USA, ca. 1950s. A charming pair of ceramic mugs by Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1908-2007). Each features expertly hand-thrown form with figural horse and bird motifs. Mary and Edwin Scheier’s lifelong collaboration began in the 1930s when they worked for the Works Progress Administration. Originally traveling puppeteers, and largely self-taught, they won various awards in national competitions for their ceramics. From 1940 to 1960, they taught at the University of New Hampshire, Durham. Both signed and in overall excellent vintage condition. Dimensions: 3.5” diameter x 5.5” high.
