South East Asia, Late 19th Century & Early 20th Century. A collection of brass betel nut boxes in a wide range of shapes - some with embossed or applied decoration. Mostly acquired in Thailand during the 1970s and 1980s. Commonly referred to as betel nut, the areca nut is the seed of the areca palm, which becomes a stimulant once ingested. An important cultural practice, betel nut chewing has traditionally played a significant role in social customs and religious practices. All in overall excellent condition - and perfect for stashing one’s poison of choice. Dimensions: 5” wide x 4” deep x 4” high (largest). Priced individually.
