Makah Native American Lidded Basket
Makah Native American Lidded Basket
$375.00
USA, ca. late 19th century. A beautifully executed Nootka or Makah lidded basket from the Pacific Northwest. Features handwoven bear grass and cedar bark construction, which attests to this piece's age and quality. Tightly and finely woven with a pleasing muted exterior - while interior remains vibrant. A larger example in excellent structural condition with soft patina.
A testament to the skill and creativity of its maker, baskets such as this began attracting European buyers in the 1850s. The bear grass and cedar bark are indigenous to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington, and can only be employed for weaving when harvested correctly. Truly a lovely and meticulous object.
