Carl Koch Lounge Chairs Chairs & Ottoman
Carl Koch Lounge Chairs Chairs & Ottoman
USA, ca. 1950s. A scarce pair of Sno-Shu lounge chairs with matching ottoman by architect Carl Koch for Vermont Tubbs, an established maker of snow shoes since 1840. Each features a solid ash frame with sweeping late Art Deco lines and rawhide webbing. Sturdy and quite comfortable, these would be a welcome addition to any camp, cabin, or for the serious design enthusiast. Condition is excellent.
Carl Koch (1912-1998) was a prolific American architect most associated the design of prefabricated homes. Receiving his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in 1937, Koch briefly studied under Walter Gropius. After six months in Sweden studying with Sven Markelius, he began teaching at Harvard - while also developing Snake Hill, a set of early modernist houses in Belmont, MA. An advocate of clean, simple, and highly functional design, Koch’s Techbuilt homes - and his involvement with Acorn / Deck houses - drastically influenced the approach to affordable housing in the US.
