Brazil, ca. 1970s. An enigmatic and appealing sculpture with painted black base. Fashioned from one piece of found wood, the artist has cleverly revealed the figure hiding within. Faintly carved face and pleasing presence create a somewhat mysterious character. While we have not been able to identify the maker, the piece is reminiscent of the work of Nino - or João Cosmo Félix Dos Santos - an almost illiterate woodcarver who established himself as a successful folk artist in the mid 20th century.
