China, ca. 1880. A charming painted elm chest most likely from the Shanxi Province. Often referred to as an opera chest, this style of lightweight wood trunk was originally used by actors to transport costumes and props. Features traditional hand-painted floral motifs surrounding a theatrical scene. While well-traveled and distressed, the piece remains quite sturdy and in overall good antique condition. Would make a useful coffee table, side table, or accent piece. Retains original iron hardware to front. Replacement hinges to back could be swapped out easily if so desired.
