Canada, ca. 1950s. A rare Ruspan armchair designed by Russell Spanner (1916-1974). Features birch construction with natural finish, webbed seat, and flared arms. Manufactured by the family business, Spanner Products Limited, Spanner’s futuristic designs employed innovative techniques and materials. Spanner, who happened to be an amateur wrestling champion, would demonstrate the strength of his pieces by jumping on them - or heaving them across the factory floor. A quirky example of modernist Canadian design in overall very good vintage condition. Appropriate surface wear attests to age and authenticity.
