Carl Koch (1912-1998) was a prolific American architect most associated the design of prefabricated homes. Receiving his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) in 1937, Koch briefly studied under Walter Gropius. After six months in Sweden studying with Sven Markelius, he began teaching at Harvard - while also developing Snake Hill, a set of early modernist houses in Belmont, MA. An advocate of clean, simple, and highly functional design, Koch’s Techbuilt homes - and his involvement with Acorn / Deck houses - drastically influenced the approach to affordable housing in the US.
