China, ca. 1920s or 1930s. Two Art Deco scatter rugs most likely from Tianjin. Often referred to as “Nichols” rugs after American entrepreneur Walter Nichols, who helped market the carpets in the wake of World War I. Each features handmade wool construction with stylized floral motifs, asymmetrical composition, and wide borders. Evocative, transitional. and just plain lovely. Both in overall very good vintage condition with pleasing, and appropriate, wear.
