Japan, ca. 1960s. A nicely executed woodblock print by Kiyoshi Saitō (1907-1997). Titled Nara, it carries signature and date on the reverse. Presented with original, period mounting. Beginning his career as a sign painter’s apprentice, Saitō became a respected artist during his lifetime. In 1948, he exhibited at the Salon Printemps, an event sponsored by Americans for Japanese Artists, which helped reinvigorate interest in the woodblock medium. In 1956, he was sponsored by the Sate Department and the Asia Foundation to travel and exhibit around the US and Europe. Saitō’s prints were all self-drawn, self-carved, and self-printed.
