Izar Samawa Embroidery

Izar Samawa Embroidery

$550.00

Iraq, ca. 1960s. A visually compelling wool embroidery from the Samawa area. Traditionally made by the girls and women living in the marshlands of southern Iraq, these blankets or rugs are often associated with weddings and were intended for personal use. With iconography and patterns dating back to Mesopotamia, both African and Indian influences are also visible. Relatively scarce and not intended for trade, these blankets have not been produced for thirty years. (Saddam Hussein drained the marshlands in 1991, which led to a decline of Marsh Arab culture.) In overall excellent vintage condition. Would make a stunning wall-hanging or look quite attractive at the foot of a bed. Dimensions: 89” long x 28” wide. Item: 3306-7.
