USA, ca. 1950s. A graphic ceramic trivet by Walter Addison (1914-1982). Features thick asymmetrical form with pleasing matte glaze. Born in Spokane, Washington, Addison moved to New York City in 1930 as a young, aspiring artist. Over the next thirty years, he established himself as a outstanding animal illustrator. During the 1940s, he was the lead artist at the Bronx Zoo creating many of its famous murals. He earned several public art commissions including the mural at the Governor Clinton Hotel in New York and the mural for the New York City Aquarium in 1965. Found in Connecticut, where Addison maintained a converted blacksmith’s barn - and kept various wild and domesticated animals, such as raccoons, skunks, dogs, and cats. A fun piece with a great story in overall excellent vintage condition. Dimensions: 6.5 wide x 6.5” deep x .75” high.
