USA, ca. 1930s. A lovely pair of cheerful floral plates by Edith Varian Cockcroft (1881-1962). Hand-painted and quite collectible, each features expressive floral motifs. Perfect for setting an unexpected table for two - or would make appealing wall decor. Signed and in overall excellent condition with only age-appropriate crazing. Dimensions: 10” diamater x 1” high.

Born in Brooklyn to a family descended from early Dutch and Huguenot settlers, Edith Varian Cockcroft was a painter, designer, inventor, and ceramicist. She exhibited at venues such as the Paris Salon, National Academy of Design, and Art Institute of Chicago. Known for her nude portraits and landscapes, Cockcroft also patented silks and velvets, produced dinnerware, and designed theater sets.
