Tanzania, ca. early 20th century. An antique milking stool from the Hehe community. Fashioned from one piece of indigenous hardwood, stools like this were used for practical rather than ceremonial purposes. An isolated pastoralist people, the Hehe are historically famous for vanquishing a German expedition at Lugalo in 1891. Under the leadership of Chief Mkwawa, they maintained resistance for seven years against colonial forces. Possesses a warm patina with strong and pleasing presence. Condition is overall excellent. Dimensions: 17” diameter (top) x 10.75” high.
