A New York Apartment Filled With “Bookish Warmth”

These are not living spaces designed after a single period style. Instead, these are rooms full of variety, filled with delights in the surprise achieved by pairing disparate design elements. (For example, a family heirloom seascape painting in a heavy baroque frame mounted above a mid-century-inspired couch topped with African mud-cloth pillows.)

In this home, the aim was to create dimension and warmth through a mixture of materials, tones and objects. A favorite piece of furniture is the Eames lounge. More favorite elements are works of art, including vintage Calder and Braque exhibition posters found at an antique store in Cambridge. Lastly, the plants — many plants! They add life and personality to the space, softening its edges with joyful greenery.
